Back in the previous century, way up on a ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, a vintner told me that at a certain price point, with certain wines (table reds), and to save the good stuff for the great stuff, a screw top was just fine. "If you come across one of these bottles in your racks in 5 years, it means you lost it."

So, so good! And, you worked in flensing, a word I haven’t come across since my Judy Blume years. 🥂

Wait, Judy Blume used flensing?

Yes, in the book Blubber. A fifth grader is ostracized, in part and early on, as she dresses as a flenser for Halloween.

Amazing. I thought it was limited to Melville.

“This field report only scratches the surface . . . “ Yes, and I will now eagerly await the book! 👏🏼

A book on corks... certain to sell in the tens!

I wanna hear more about Myth #4 on the poster -- screwtops not being better than cork. That is a myth I volubly and confidently circulate when I am boring people at gatherings where people are drinking. I castigate the French too, which may or may not be less boring.

I didn't get much into the screwcaps thing -- maybe another post, another cocktail party. But they're apparently problematic in that even a small bump or dent in transit or when stocking can render them ineffective. I've heard of high defect rates, but I haven't much yet researched this. I will, however, be happy to hear you castigate the French.

I confess in advance that I will be using the "x equivalent of a sad trombone" without crediting you. Sue me. About 28 years ago we visited a cork plantation outside Evota that was growing around a stone circle. We were able to walk right up from the road and explore. It was beautiful and dreamy but also a little woo woo and weird in the evening light to see the naked trees guarding the megalithic site.

I have not yet explored the mystical side of cork, other than creating a bartop version of Stonehenge with stray corks. You have given me reason to return.

What I failed to say: this is a fascinating piece. And since my twilight communion in a field with our distant past I haven't bought a screw top bottle of wine.
